Purpose

The Communication Department exists to educate students in the development of skills that will enable them to appropriately and creatively utilize the latest technology to communicate Christ creatively. To be a competent communicator one must know the Word that God gave us and the world God created. The common core of the Strategic Communicaiton program provides a foundation in essential disciplines that will contribute to the student’s ability to communicate effectively in today’s world.

The Graphic Design program at CIU teaches you the technical foundations with industry-leading design software* needed for careers in graphic design, marketing, advertising and media integration. You will study the fundamentals of design, digital photography, illustration, drawing, web design, logo development, corporate branding, and more. You’ll also explore art history along with the latest in design technologies as you learn to create compelling visual communication– all from a Christian worldview.

*Students are required to provide their own laptop computers with a subscription to the Adobe Suite software.

Objectives

  • Develop essential disciplines in the fields of media and communication
  • Integrate biblical knowledge into the display of media for marketplace and ministry organizations
  • Evaluate visual communication strategies based on data-driven outcomes and popular culture
  • Create industry-standard materials for interactive media and multi-platform campaigns
  • Develop a professional portfolio highlighting your skill mastery and artistic talents
  • Determine appropriate media to convey meaning via messages

Graduation Requirements

  • Minimum 120 semester hours of credit
  • Complete 18 hours in Bible and Theology courses
  • 6 semester hours of Leadership Development courses
  • Minimum of 30 semester hours of General Education
  • Minimum 24 semester hours in Communication Core courses
  • Minimum 24 semester hours in Graphic Design courses
  • Minimum 30 semester hours of upper division courses
  • Satisfactory evidence of Christian character and doctrinal views
  • Meets all ethical requirements and Student Life standards
  • Minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA
