College of Arts and Sciences

From The Desk of The Dean…

Greetings from the College of Arts and Sciences at Columbia International University!

The mission of the College of Arts and Sciences is to educate students for life and service through Bible and Christian ministries, liberal arts, as well as the health, natural and social sciences. We strive to prepare our graduates for positions of influence from which they can impact the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Bible and Christian Ministries: All CIU students complete a Bible and Theology core as part of their degree. Some students have a passion to serve the Lord through the church and parachurch ministries and select one of the majors in the Biblical and Christian ministries area. Others will complete the 30 semester hours of Bible, theology, and interdisciplinary Bible-related courses as a double major. The extra Bible courses will help students develop a biblical paradigm for life, whatever their chosen ministry or vocation. Above all, we seek to help students grow in their relationship with Christ.

Liberal Arts Studies: All CIU students take a core of liberal arts courses including courses in English, Philosophy, History and Art/Music. Some students excel in these areas and choose them for their major or minor, while others take them for personal enrichment. Focused study in the humanities fosters creativity and analytical reasoning ability. Such skills are valued in the job market for editors, writers, lawyers, and musicians. Regardless of the major, all students benefit from liberal arts general education classes. Creative problem solving and the ability to approach an issue from various perspectives are valued skills in the marketplace. The humanities explore what it means to be created in the image of God.

Health and Natural Sciences: Some of our students feel a special calling to be the hands and feet of Christ as they minister to the physical and spiritual needs of others. This is accomplished as we prepare students for careers as future physicians, physical therapists and other professionals in a variety of health specialties.  For some, they will pursue graduate school or positions in the biotech industry or wildlife biology.

Social Sciences: The emphasis in social sciences is understanding human behavior. Some students want to help others as a counselor or human services case worker. Others are interested in psychology research and wish to pursue graduate education. Creative students will enjoy studies in graphic design, digital media or cinematography.  With a goal of communicating Christ creatively, students are taught to bring a missions focus to their efforts.

Every CIU program will challenge you to grow biblically, intellectually, and spiritually as you develop the skills you need to serve in today’s world. May the Lord give you the grace to pursue His calling, whatever it is and wherever it takes you.

Yours in Christ,

David A. DeWitt, Ph.D.
