Overview
The English major contributes to students’ intellectual and spiritual formation through developing and sharpening students’ abilities to read, write, and think critically. A rich program of study provides broad exposure to literary texts, engagement with literary theories, and opportunities to explore various genres of writing. The major prepares students academically for careers in education, further graduate study (particularly in the areas of English studies, law, and library science), and equips students for effective use of the written word in mission and market place ministries.
Objectives
The English major equips students to:
- Develop habits of critical thinking and judgment through reading and discussing numerous genres of literature.
- Read and analyze literary characteristics of classic and contemporary written works-Western, British, and American-from a variety of historical eras.
- Write with clarity on a number of topics and apply rhetorical principles and models to a myriad of writing situations.
- Research literary works and criticism of these works, utilizing the full range of academic library resources.

Students are required to take one year (two semesters) of a foreign language (biblical or modern).
Literature Courses (12) select four
Students must select and complete both courses in either British, or American Literature sequence (African American Literature can substitute for one of the American Literature courses).
