Purpose
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is an entry to practice degree that prepares students to become registered nurses after graduation and upon passing the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses). At CIU, nursing is a ministry, and students will be part of a supportive, Christ-centered community where they will be challenged to think and grow as a nurse leader. Registered nurses can work in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, doctor’s offices and community clinics, and schools. CIU Nursing students will also receive education in cross-cultural and disaster relief nursing.
Objectives
- Integrate theory and scientific knowledge into holistic nursing care planning and patient education.
- Deliver culturally competent and safe population care to patients in diverse environments as a valued interprofessional team member.
- Exhibit ethical, moral, spiritual, professional and positive, caring behaviors as a Christian nurse.
- Seek continual personal and professional growth and improvement.
- Constructively advocate for system changes to improve the health care environment and patient outcomes.
- Employ collaborative leadership and organizational skills in nursing care of patients across the lifespan.
Admission Requirements
- Students will meet the general admittance requirements for the Nursing major and then apply to the Nursing Program after their sophomore year.
- Nursing majors who have completed the prerequisites for the Nursing Program will need the following:
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on all prerequisite coursework
- “C” or better in each prerequisite course
- Science prerequisites must be completed within the last 5 years
- 70% or higher on the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills)
- Satisfactory score on the TOEFL (80 internet-based or 570 paper-based) or the IELTS intl. Academic Course Type 2 (6.5) for applicants whose native language is not English
- Personal interview with the BSN Admissions committee
- Students may not be on probation, must not have any disqualifying offenses, and will need to complete a background check and drug screen prior to beginning the Nursing Program.
- First time freshmen and select transfer students can receive priority admission based on a 3.5 high school GPA and 1100 SAT (520 or higher on math) or 22 on ACT (20 or higher on math). Priority students will have a spot saved in the nursing program for them, provided they continue to meet the grade requirements for program admission and interview with the BSN admissions committee.

Graduation Requirements
- Minimum 129 semester hours of credit.
- Complete 18 hours in Bible and Theology courses.
- 6 semester hours of Leadership Development courses.
- Minimum of 30 semester hours of General Education
- Minimum 63 semester hours in Nursing courses.
- Minimum 30 semester hours of upper division courses
- Satisfactory evidence of Christian character and doctrinal views
- Meets all ethical requirements and Student Life standards
- Any course in which a grade of C or below is earned must be repeated.
